Once the shopping ends, let the giving begin.
That’s the logic behind Giving Tuesday, a global, 24-hour campaign to encourage charitable giving. Now in its fourth year, Giving Tuesday was started by New York’s 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, and it harnesses social media to connect donors and causes.
Last year’s 15,000 nonprofit participants raised an estimated $45 million dollars; this year, 30,000 organizations are signed up. Among them are these institutions:
Cheshire Academy is hosting a Giving Tuesday Twitter chat for independent schools. Swap philanthropy ideas at 1 p.m. Eastern with the hashtag #ISGivingTuesday.
The University of Michigan’s Giving Blueday, profiled on this blog last year, is back, with hourly challenges. (Last year’s effort raised more than $3,000,000.)
Trinity College created this video about how students are preparing for Giving Tuesday.
Webster University is encouraging its community members to post an unselfie with its “I Give In Honor Of…” sign.
Utah State University is using the slogan “Aggies Helping Aggies.”
Alma College has a $10,000 challenge that will be unlocked after 100 Giving Tuesday gifts.
Washington Adventist University aims to raise $5,000 during Giving Tuesday.
At McKendree University, if 500 donations are made, a board member will donate $10,000. Its hashtag is #McKitCount.
The University of Kentucky is joining in Giving Tuesday festivities for the first time, using the tagline #SeeBlueGiveBlue.
For its Rutgers Giving Day on Giving Tuesday, Rutgers University aims to raise $500,000.
New England College is encouraging its community members to share stories of giving back with the hashtag #GRIMSGIVE.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is celebrating its third #TarheelTuesday giving day.
For its Giving Tuesday celebration, The University of Illinois at Chicago is using the tagline “Dream big. Work hard. Do good.”

Northwestern University’s Giving Tuesday campaign raised $540,771 from 1,616 alumni, family, and friend contributors. The official university Giving Tuesday hashtag was #CATSGiveBack.
The College of Natural Sciences in the University of Massachusetts Amherst participated in Giving Tuesday, with #Give2CNS. We asked donors to dedicate their gifts in honor or in memory of someone in their lives and then we posted their dedications on social media. We raised more than $7,000 and had fun sharing dedications.

An anonymous donor at Bluffton University give $100 to the Bluffton (annual) Fund for every unique donor (giving at least $10) on #GivingTuesday. The goal was to increase the number of donors from 66 last year, to 100. By the end of the day, we received gifts from 350 donors, totaling $64,300 with the matching gift. With every $20+ gift to UIndy, we donated a pair of warm gloves to @WheelerMission in Indianapolis to help the less fortunate stay warm this winter. We received 200 gifts totaling $15,055 on #GivingTuesday. All gifts were counted in the Campaign for the University of Indianapolis and will be matched dollar for dollar by our Campaign Chair. The University of Northern Colorado participated in #GivingTuesday (which we brand as #BearTuesday) for the fourth year. We are still tallying gifts but it was definitely a strong day for online giving and a nice kick-off to our CYE campaign.
The University of Notre Dame is hosting it’s 2nd Annual Proud to Be ND Virtual Run & Walk (last year’s event drew 526 participants, all of whom received an actual finisher’s medal)
